Originally built as a country retreat for the Savoye family between 1928 and 1931, the house fell into disuse during the Second World War and subsequently deteriorated into a state of disrepair. Following this year’s Paris Déco Off, it felt long overdue to finally make the trip to Poissy to visit Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye—the building that inspired me to study architecture and one of the most influential works of modern architecture and design. It remains a project that continues to amaze me to this day.
Seeing it in person, isolated within its landscape, was almost exactly as I had imagined. The approach to the building and the experience of ascending the internal ramp through the house are monumental. The restrained use of colour is both strategic and impactful, while the generosity of light and shadow throughout is staggering.
It is easy to understand why Villa Savoye is considered one of the greatest achievements of modern architecture.
