Marlborough Gate
Restoration – Renovation – Listed Building – Architecture – Interior Architecture
Marlborough Gate is a terraced block offering south-facing views across Kensington Gardens. Forming part of a Grade II listed terrace constructed between 1865 and 1870, it is a fine example of late 19th-century architecture with ornate Neo-Classical detailing. Originally built as a single-family dwelling, the building was converted into the National Westminster Bank in 1914 and renamed Marlborough Gate House. The upper floors were adapted into four flats in the 1930s, with the property becoming fully residential by the mid-20th century.
Studio Havn were appointed to restore, renovate, and reconfigure three of the flats and the associated common areas, which had fallen into a poor state of repair. The works upgraded each flat to modern standards while preserving and celebrating the building’s architectural character.
The reconfiguration created open-plan living spaces and en suite bathrooms, with all interventions carefully designed to respect the building’s historic significance whilst securing its long-term sustainable use as a contemporary residential property.
